Green Book Sites in Louisiana: Remnants and Recollections of a Segregated World
Green Book Sites in Louisiana: Remnants and Recollections of a Segregated World
The “Negro Motorist Green Book,” was a road-travel guide for African-Americans (1936 to 1967) that listed services and accommodations for African-Americans. Henry Smith, who grew up in Seattle, WA, will share his experiences of summer family road trips from Seattle to Louisiana to visit relatives in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when segregation and suspicion could mean real danger for the young, African-American family. Kevin Shannahan will be sharing photos he has taken of the vanishing remains of some of the surviving facilities in Central and North Louisiana that were included in various editions of The Green Book.
