The series was started in November of 2004. At the time Dana McCommon of Fairfield Studios was recording local Red River Radio programs at the studio. One of these programs was "No Cover". It was Dana's idea to do a program that sounded like a house concert recorded in someone's house. He wanted to bring in touring acts and record them for broadcast on RRR. I had performed on "No Cover", and Dana asked me to help out since I had hosted hundreds of local songwriter's nights in the area. SHC was originally conceived as a radio program for Red River Radio and as such Red River Radio was gracious to lend us some vital assistance and broadcast our shows for about the first 2 years. That's how it started.
It was, and still is an all-volunteer effort. Jim Huckabay, Sandra Odom, Debbie Unverzagt, A.J.Cascio along with Dana McCommon and myself have all been active since the beginning. Since 2004 we have produced an impressive archive of approximately 160 concerts. All recorded with multi-track audio as well as multi-camera digital video. We incorporated and became a non-profit 501c3 organization in 2013 in order to pursue funding to do post production on our massive archive, and return to Red River Radio air waves.
We've had some great artists, Jesse Winchester comes to mind...its probably his last recorded live concert. Most of our artists travel the folk circuits, stopping by on their way to the Kerville Folk Festival or the Fayettville Roots Festival so we've hosted talent like Tom Prasada Rao and Tom Kimmel of the Shirpas, film star Ronnie Cox, The Steel Wheels, Steve Poltz and Della Mae. We have also enjoyed many Nashville artists like Gary Nicholson, Kevin Welsh, Earl Bud Lee, and international artists such as Peppino D'Agistino, Muriel Anderson, Adrian Legg, and Brooks Williams. True to our own roots we also proudly present many artists that either grew up here and had success elsewhere or choose to live here like Brian Blade, Victoria Williams, the Lightnin Bugs, Buddy Flett, David Egan and Dylan Leblanc.
The plan going forward is to grow into more musical genres. Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band proved Shreveport has a taste for contemporary jazz, we're setting our sights on doing a blues series, and possibly some gospel. We're continuing to pursue funding to secure more and better talent, provide consistent post production to support the Red River Radio program and maintain our growing archive of authentic American music.
