Come From Away is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family. Multi-platinum country artist Sara Evans takes the stage with a voice that’s as powerful as it is heartfelt. With a string of chart-topping hits like “Suds in the Bucket” and “Born to Fly,” Evans blends traditional country roots with contemporary flair. Her engaging stage presence and authentic storytelling create a night of music that’s both high-energy and deeply personal.

The gala evening will feature flute maestro Ronu Majumdar and tabla maestro Harshad Kanetkar, along with appetizers, drinks, and dinner.

Back by popular demand, violinist Kinga Augustyn will commence our season by performing pieces from a trio of American composers, Poling, Copland, and Barber. To the Moon, Mars, and Beyond, composed by our very own Maestro Kermit Poling, encompasses the American spirit of adventure and embracing new frontiers. Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland is one of the most beloved of all American classical works and Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto is both stunningly beautiful and thrilling!

Bringing four area legends, Trey Johnson, Jason Helms, Wes Jeans, and Donnie Dotson, together for one unforgettable night. Together, these accomplished artists form a powerhouse lineup delivering an evening of exceptional musicianship, unforgettable performances, and authentic East Texas music.

Join us for the 4th Annual Passion for Purple Luncheon as East Texas comes together during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to support survivors, raise awareness, and strengthen our community. This year’s featured speaker is Melissa Dohme-Hill, a domestic-violence survivor, advocate, and executive director of Hands Across the Bay. The event centers on raising awareness and supporting the work of the Family Crisis Center of East Texas.

Tickets are $50 per person, or $500 for a reserved table of eight.

SFA Gardens to host fall plant sale

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host
its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center in historic Nacogdoches.

The sale will feature an array of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, like east Texas native plants, and pollinator-friendly selections. Expect to find great shrubs, like azaleas, and trees, including Japanese maples and more. A list of all available plants will be posted on the SFA Gardens website two weeks before the sale.

This very popular event helps to fund the staff salaries and the daily operations of SFA Gardens. The areas under the SFA Gardens umbrella include Mast Arboretum, Pineywoods Native Plant Center, Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, Gayla Mize Garden and Kingham Children’s Garden. Visiting the gardens is free, and the trials are open to the public every day from dawn to dusk.

Parking will be available at SFA’s Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center, located at 2428 Raguet St. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring a wagon for their plants.
