A scene from Wagner's Das Rheingold

Airs Saturday, March 9, 2019, at 12 noon. The 2018-19 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with Das Rheingold, the first opera of Wagner’s four-part cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. The cast of preeminent Wagnerian singers features Greer Grimsley as Wotan, the flawed king of the gods, Norbert Ernst as the crafty Loge, and Tomasz Konieczny as Alberich, who forges a ring that carries great power and a dreadful curse. Jamie Barton is Wotan’s wife Fricka, Günther Groissbock and Dmitry Belosselskiy sing the giants Fasolt and Fafner, Karen Cargill is Erda, the mysterious goddess of the earth, Gerhard Siegel is Alberich’s brother Mime, and Wendy Bryn Harmer is Freia, the goddess of youth. Philippe Jordan conducts the performance. Das Rheingold is the first of all four Ring cycle operas to be featured in upcoming Saturday matinee broadcasts. It will be heard live over Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12:00 noon CT on Saturday, March 9.
