EL DORADO, AR  MATH CONTEST-  When you think of extracurricular activities at school,  you probably think of things like football, basketball, or marching band, but there are other school events that may not get as much attention but are equally important.  One such event  taking place in Eldorado, Arkansas this Saturday is the 9th Annual Martha E. Deichler / Union County Math Contest which will bring hundreds of students together to compete using their math skills.

"We have about 250 students signe dup from about seven different schools in the county," explained  John Davis, Math Chair for El Dorado School District. " The tests go from sixth grade all the way up to Calculus BC which would be about ten subject areas."

"It's no different if there's a basketball game, football game, some kind of band competition." John Davis, Math Chair - El Dorado School District

Unlike previous year’s Math Contests, this year the organizers and students have to take safety precautions  regarding  Coronavirus safety measures.

"(It's) being held at El Dorado High School so there's already protocols in place for kids to come to school on a daily basis," Davis said.

A Math Contest may not sound like something that would attract a lot of attention but as Davis says this event has drawn a lot of participants from surrounding  schools  who  clearly find this activity worthwhile.

"You're involving kids who find this to be important," Davis explained. "It's no different if there's a basketball game, football game, some kind of band competition."

The 9th Annual Martha E.Deichler / Union County Math Contest takes place this Saturday at the Eldorado High School Arena, in Eldorado, Arkansas. Medals and Cash prizes will be awarded to the top contestants, some are likely to compete at bigger state competitions as well.
