Homelessness in the United States reached a record high in 2023. On any given night, more than 650,000 people experience homelessness. People living homeless have higher rates of untreated mental illnesses and substance use disorders than the general population. That can make it difficult to find a permanent place to live. From the streets of New York City we’ll hear directly from people who have lived homeless about what they needed most and meet a street psychiatrist visiting the most vulnerable folks living outside. We’ll also hear a story set in New Orleans which looks at the investment made by the Department of Veterans Affairs to house veterans living homeless. And, we’ll hear from top mental health experts working with people who are homeless and struggle with mental illness.
