Texas Counties May Opt For Countywide Voting Centers

TX VOTING PRECINCTS -  Thousands of Texans’ votes were thrown out during the last presidential and midterm elections after voters  showed up at the wrong polling location.   And so there are some big changes coming for voters in some Texas Counties as the Texas Secretary of State has  approved  five  more counties to switch from  precinct-style voting to countywide polling locations  ahead  of  the  2019 and 2020 election cycles.   Voters in a county that conducts precinct by precinct voting currently can only vote at certain polling  places, which  has led to confusion.   In San Antonio – the Bexar County Elections Administrator says they will use the “vote center” model -- voters may cast ballots at any polling location on Election Day.  Members of the Texas House Committee on Elections are meeting   to  discuss  the  issue.   Democrat Phillip Cortez represents San Antonio.

“We’re excited about it but it’s kind of an unknown right now.  We’re trying to figure out more specifically I guess, how do we advertise, promote and educate how these voters center work”

According to the Texas Secretary of State’s website  East Texas Counties that don’t need  approval  to use countywide voting centers include:  Gregg,  Jefferson,  Rusk,  and Smith.   A new campaign to educate voters on Countywide voting begins on Oct. 1st.
