LSUS VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER - For Veterans transitioning from military service to civilian life, things can be challenging, especially trying to navigate the process of going back to school, as Veterans have more paperwork than most in getting financial aid which can be a frustrating process. Last Friday, LSU in Shreveport held a grand opening ceremony for a new Veterans Resource Center Jill Eaves is project coordinator with the center and is also a veteran, she explains what the center is all about.
"The overall purpose for our Veterans Center is to overcome any of the hurdles that military or military
affiliated students go through in order to go to college," explained Eaves. "We have so many certifiying papers that we have to do even to get admitted into the university and to use our benefits, we have to get a certificate of eligibility. To get that we have to go through the VA (Veterans Administration). Of course getting paperwork through the VA takes a little bit of time and so that's just one of the steps to get enrolled, we have to get certified for each semester."
Another focus for the Veterans Resource Center is to help veterans turn their military experience into academic and career assets. LSUS Chancellor Larry Clark himself a veteran explains.
"They've been involved in management and they don't realize they've been involved in management," said Clark. "And we can help them understand how to take their skillset, their experiences and help them make that work for them either in the classroom or what they do beyond the classroom, whatever career goals they have."
