STAYING COOL & SAVING MONEY - As temperatures climb this week in the Ark-La-Tex, so will electric energy consumption, that means more strain on the power grid and a bigger electric bill at the end of the month. With temperatures reaching triple digits and heat indices ranging from 105 to 110 degrees air conditioners will be working overtime as people try to stay cool. But there are some ways you can save money and still beat the heat. Southwestern Electric Power Co. an AEP company is sharing tips on how you can conserve energy and keep your electric bill in check.
Karen Wissing is a spokesperson for SWEPCO, in addition to staying hydrated and running ceiling fans counter-clockwise…she says setting your home’s thermostat is an important step.
And when was the last time you checked your air filter? Wissing says this is often the most overlooked item that can make a big difference to your cooling bill.
Wissing says other things that help are keeping drapes closed and checking for any air-gaps in windows and doors, plus it helps to have weather-stripping in place and proper insulation. If all this sounds like a lot to handle, she explains that SWEPCO has a free service to help determine what your home may need to become more energy efficient.
SWEPCO also offers energy efficiency incentive programs for both business and residential customers
that will begin at the start of next year. Swepco spokesperson Wissing said the company will find ways to help fund energy upgrades to your home or business to help lower energy costs.
