The first night of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas is now in the history books.
Governor Greg Abbott speaks later today on this second and final day, as he fights for a fourth term against Democratic Texas House Representative Gina Hinojosa.
The Texas Newsroom’s Blaise Gainey reports:

“For much of the year, Gov. Abbott's reelection ads have focused on he's done — and still plans to do — for Texas....and NOT his opponent...or even mentioning Gina Hinojosa by name. But in recent days, that's changed. Including this ad Abbott recently posted on X, which lifts sound from a buzzy new documentary. "I don't have anything to deceive you on, of course I'm not deceiving you I'm engaging with you as a human being." "Don't let Gina deceive you, Texas," Abbott wrote. Another Abbott post included an image of Hinojosa where an American Flag was digitally altered into a Transgender Pride Flag. In it, he wrote the Democrat wants to, quote, "turn your local public school into a gender transition camp." Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett responded on social media, saying Abbott's attacks showed he's nervous about the governor's race.”

Latino voters could play a significant role in Texas politics this November.
But longtime Latino-vote analyst Mike Madrid claims that politicians may be focusing on the wrong issues when trying to win their support.
Madrid says the message he's hearing from Latino voters is
overwhelmingly about the economy:

“They want an economy that works, an aspirational working class economy, and that means affordability. That means the ability to buy a home. It means to achieve the American dream, which has been taken from them, because they believe that people have manipulated and stolen that opportunity from them up top.”

Madrid says Latino voters increasingly believe both political parties have failed to deliver on those economic issues.
He thinks that could make Latinos less loyal to either party.

In Louisiana… a massive effort is underway to plug and clean-up orphaned oil and gas well sites.
The state’s department of Conservation and Energy plans to use $30 million in federal funding to clean up the sites in north Louisiana and state funding to clean up orphaned well sites in south Louisiana.
Spokesperson Patrick Courreges says it’s important to get these orphaned well sites plugged and cleaned so that they don’t cause any problems in the future:

“Any time you have that connection between the surface and somewhere underground you need to get that addressed. You need to get that pathway cut off if nobody’s actually making use of it.”

The overall effort is expected to take three to five years to complete.

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin is continuing his statewide Initiative called “one pill can kill.”
Wednesday’s appearance at Northwest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville marks the 13th such stop since the initiative began three years ago in the summer of 2023.
Griffin says The training helps equip student leaders with information about the dangers of illicit opioids and the resources available to respond to an overdose to save a life:

“Stepping up and saying, ‘we want to be part of the solution, that’s the first part of it. And so, I appreciate y’all stepping up and saying, ‘we’ll b e a partner.’”

The CDC says arkansas opioid overdose deaths have dropped by 50% since the initiative began.

The National Weather Service in Shreveport is calling for:
- Mostly sunny conditions today with a high near 98, and heat index values as high as 105.
- A few strong thunderstorms will be possible across portions of our Four-State area this evening and overnight. Strong to Severe winds will be the primary threat.
- Tomorrow: that ‘feels like temperature’ eases to 103, while the high falls to 95, with a 30% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
- For the Weekend: the chance of rain and storms sticks around, with highs in the mid-90s.
