Controversy now surrounds the violence which broke out immediately after the Erika Kirk event between supporters and protesters outside the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion on Wednesday, with a trooper injured, and several arrests made.

Conservative activist Erika Kirk came to the Arkansas Capitol This week. Kirk is the chairwoman and CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), and the widow of the group’s founder Charlie Kirk. As Little Rock Public Radio reports, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders delivered some public remarks, with Kirk, at the governor’s mansion on Wednesday. The Governor signed a proclamation encouraging students to start TPUSA chapters at their colleges and high schools.
Kirk said some students opening chapters have faced backlash. “And if you are a chapter leader, or you’re part of a chapter, and you are a believer in Christ and you are getting persecuted for your faith and your values, someone comes up and flips your table, someone throws all your resources on the ground, count it all joy. You’re being persecuted because you believe in Jesus Christ. Count it all joy.”

The language of the governor’s proclamation did not mandate schools create TPUSA chapters. A news conference held by the Young Democrats of Arkansas (YDA) prior to the governor’s announcement, sharply criticized the governor's endorsement of TPUSA, however. Arkansas Democratic Party Chair, Retired Army Colonel Marcus Jones, cited the “Equal access Act of 1984” signed by President Ronald Reagan, which protects students’ rights to organize by political affiliation without discrimination.
Just last summer [July 22, 2025], TPUSA also launched Club America, a new high school chapter-based program, which Jones also alluded to in his remarks on students’ rights, as he explained, “That means if a Club America chapter is allowed in every high school and college across our state, a Young Democrat chapter will, as well."
Jones concluded, "Those students that are listening, if your high school or college refuses to let you start a club at your school, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has your back. Our lawyers will have something to say about that.”

Protesters gather outside of the Arkansas Governor's Mansion ahead of an event featuring Erika Kirk and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Arkansas State Police say a trooper was injured and three arrests were made after violence broke out between TPUSA supporters and protestors after the event.

Zayd Kelley, chair of the College Democrats of Arkansas, announced the group has seen historic growth within the last year, bringing YDA chapters to eight new college campuses. Kelley added that these chapters brought within them over 100 new signups. And YDA President Billy Cook also explained during their news conference that students begin chapters of the YDA of their own accord, ‘organically,’ without any state backing, questioning the governor’s endorsement of TPUSA as a potential abuse of her state power.
In a statement released by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas, Executive Director Holly Dickson said, “The Governor promoting a student club to be in every high school and college in Arkansas is out of step with federal law and the rights of students.” Dickson added that “the governor’s actions may jeopardize the very clubs she is trying to support and force upon students, as school official can and should deny access to clubs that are not led by students.”

Violence & Arrests Outside
Arkansas State Police say a trooper was injured after an altercation during protests outside after the Erika Kirk event, which led to several arrests. As for the altercation, Dickson released this separate statement:

Yesterday's (Wednesday, March 11, 2026) events outside the Governor's mansion were absurd and unnecessary. Video shows attendees at the Governor's mansion assaulting a protester, yet police arrested protesters. All agencies that had officers involved should investigate the actions of their officers and take remedial measures to address the harms inflicted yesterday and ensure this does not happen again.
Moments like this — where protected speech, opposing viewpoints, and racial tensions intersect — require law enforcement to respond with fairness and restraint. Their role is to safeguard everyone’s constitutional rights and avoid actions that could further inflame an already tense situation.
