Gov. Jeff Landry cites successes and urges cooperation to approve his $47 billion budget in a mostly 'standstill' budget, as lawmakers consider 1,300 bills.

As Jeff Landry began his third State of the State Address as governor of Louisiana on Monday, March 9, 2026, his was a message of promises kept on the one hand, and of priorities ahead on the other. The governor’s speech came before a joint session of the Louisiana legislature at the state capitol in Baton Rouge, to usher in the 2026 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session. Gov. Landry cited the success of $100 million secured in economic development thus far for Louisiana. He also touted a 43% drop in violent crime in New Orleans during his term in office, along with a drop in auto insurance costs for Louisiana drivers. Landry then began to make his case for passage of his $47 billion budget.
As Louisiana Public Radio reports, he reminded lawmakers of previous tax reforms and asked them to work towards removing the state income tax altogether. Gov. Landry also asked the legislature to hold judges more accountable when they release individuals who continue to commit crime.
The governor called for lawmakers to continue to work together to improve the state. “And if we do there really is no limit for what we can do for Louisiana.” Among the issues lawmakers will consider are bills to help lower insurance rates, the right to carry a gun on a college campus and making it a crime to disturb a worship service.
