The Texas Comptroller's Office says Hundreds of Texas schools have enrolled in the state's sweeping $1 billion school voucher program. That’s according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office. It’s all thanks to state legislative approval of Senate Bill 2 back in late April, then signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, while surrounded by small children during an event at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin on May 3, 2025.
As Texas Public Radio reports, acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock says about 600 private schools and Pre-K providers, along with more than 200 education service providers have applied to participate in what’s known as the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program for next school year [2026-27].
But Hancock has let it be known publicly that not enough parents know about the school voucher program in Texas. So, he spent the final week of 2025 traveling the state to deliver that message himself. The program will allow parents to receive around $10,000 to put toward private school tuition.
Students with special needs will be able to use up to $30,000 in state funds. Families who homeschool their children can receive $2,000 to be used on approved expenses.
Applications for families will open on February 4, 2026. A lottery will be used if interest exceeds available funding. The application window for families closes a little more than a month later, on March 17. The comptroller's office says it anticipates providing the first award notifications in early April.
