One in six Louisiana residents have unclaimed property according to the Louisiana Treasury Department. That accounts for the 92,348 Louisiana residents on the department’s list of property owners. State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D. says that property could come in many forms, whether it be from tax refunds, insurance payments or bank deposits, for example, or even unpaid wages or uncashed checks, and so on.
Fleming makes it a regular practice to remind the public that unclaimed property will always belong to the rightful owners and will never be claimed or surrendered to the state for any reason. As Louisiana Public Radio reports, the only challenge, according to Fleming, can be tracking down the rightful owners. “Maybe they’ve moved from their then-location, and their address has changed but it never caught up with them. Something could get lost in the mail.
There are many reasons why this happens.” Fleming says if some of that money is yours, just go online to lacashclaim.org to claim it. You can also call the Unclaimed Property Office at 1-888-925-4127 and have their staff perform a search for you.
