U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders speaks at a rally inside the historic Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport on Saturday, June 21, 2025 to a near-capacity crowd.

For the past few months, the political independent, who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, has crisscrossed the country, speaking to voters on his “Fighting Oligarchy: Where we Go from Here” rallies.

Even days after Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders took the stage to a raucous standing ovation Saturday afternoon in Shreveport, some are still talking about what he had to say. Greeting Sanders was a near-capacity crowd inside the historic Municipal Auditorium. His message, in a nutshell, is that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, and the situation is getting worse.

Those who came to hear Sanders speak said that all too often these days it’s difficult if not impossible to have an engaging, meaningful political discussion without the exchange eventually devolving into serious disagreements. That includes 30-year-old Alicia Packer of Shreveport. She told us, “Whenever a community event like this happens, it empowers people to speak out more freely.
Then Sanders turned his attention to Iran, and whether or not the U.S. should get involved – just hours before the U.S. bombed several sites in Iran. Sanders told the audience, “I think it would be a disaster for the United States to get involved with Israel right now in a war against Iran,” a roar of applause rang out as the crowd gave a standing ovation.
