Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming says 143,000 unclaimed property checks, totaling more than $34 million, will begin being mailed out Friday, May 30. Fleming credits updated address information from the Louisiana Department of Revenue for helping match more unclaimed property to its rightful owners.
As the Louisiana Radio Network reports, Fleming explained, “It’s said that one in six Louisianans is owned money. Christmas will come early. This will be kind of Christmas in June when the checks land next month.” This is the largest batch of checks mailed since 2018, reaching residents in every parish.
According to Fleming, 2,500 claims that exceed the automatic check limit will receive claim forms with instructions. “In cases where the money is at a larger scale we’ll be notifying these households giving them a form to complete there by verifying their identity.”

Fleming also made a point of informing the public these are blue checks which feature the Treasury logo on them and are legitimate. He urged recipients to cash them. He also noted that outdated addresses are often the cause of unclaimed funds.
And he emphasized that no one, not even the state of Louisiana, can spend that money. “This money is cordoned off against the legislature and the governor. They cannot spend you money. So, if you don’t claim it, your heirs one day will claim it.”
