NSU plans full week of events in honor of MLK Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 20, and Northwestern State University has a whole week of celebrations planned.

Brittany Blackwell Broussard is the Director of Culture and Climate at NSU, and she says the university is celebrating MLK Day with the Natchitoches community.

"There was a lot of Civil Rights movements that have occurred even through Natchitoches, and people need to learn that history and learn about that," Broussard says.

The celebrations start on January 16 with a screening of "Judas and the Black Messiah,” followed by the MLK days of service, and multiple other events until January 21, the National Day of Racial Healing.

Broussard credits the planning to Dr. Jasmine Wise, Coordinator for the Center for Inclusion and Diversity and Coordinator for Black Studies at NSU. Dr. Wise says all of the events not only celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but the whole movement and how far it has come.

"These things happen because this man and others fought for it," Dr. Wise says.
