For next year, Governor Jeff Landry promises to make Louisiana government operate more efficiently. State Representative Jack McFarland is the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He says reigning in government contracts is a good start. “When you can reduce those contract levels, the permits, the licenses, all those things are going to have a positive effect on our government’s budget.” McFarland says more red tape placed on business and industry will also cost more money to enforce.
Just two weeks ago, on December 12, Gov. Landry signed an executive order establishing a Fiscal Responsibility Program. The governor explained that the program will monitor state spending to “ensure our government operates in the most efficient and effective manner.”
In a statement to the public, Landry pointed to his establishment of a “Fiscal Responsibility Project” while serving as Louisiana Attorney General, and “recognized approximately $1 million in savings. He further recalled that while serving in the U.S. Congress he returned 10% of his office budget, “and asked for it to be used to pay down debt.”
