Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser made a visit to Shreveport- Bossier City on Tuesday. He is encouraging Louisiana residents to get their flu shot now. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 48% of adults in the U.S. have received a flu vaccination during the past 12 months. In Louisiana, the vaccination rate stands at 42.6%.
Nungesser made a stop at the Walgreens store on Airline Drive in north Bossier City. That’s where he emphasized what he calls the urgency of a flu shot. “People do not think about it. There’s so much else going on. It only takes a minute, you can stop in here at Walgreens, get it done quickly and it really, it can save your life. Flu, especially the young people and the elderly can be deadly. And so, it’s something that you don’t think about till it’s too late.”
Walgreens is offering free flu shot vouchers for uninsured patients during regular store hours. Nungesser’s visit makes the third such stop in recent weeks at Walgreens stores in Louisiana. Now in his third term as the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, Nungesser says every year he promotes flu shots.
The Caddo Parish Health Unit in Shreveport also confirms those with no health insurance who cannot afford a flu vaccination can receive a free flu shot if they qualify. Appointments are recommended at a parish health unit near you.
The Caddo Health Unit is located at 1035 Creswell Avenue in Shreveport. The health unit phone number is (318) 676-5222. The Bossier Parish Health Unit is located at 3022 Old Minden Road #100, in Bossier City, at (318) 741-7314. On its website, the Louisiana Department of Health also offers a link: Find a Vaccine Near You.
Nungesser also made the trip to North Louisiana for the first of six Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) Regional Litter Summits across the state. Nungesser says they want to hear the challenges faced by local governments in the fight against litter before issuing more initiatives.
