This is a big week in Alexandria, Louisiana, where a dedication ceremony took place on this Wednesday for a Salvation Army shelter for women, children and veterans. It is a project eight years in the making, including the last two years of construction on a brand new $5 million facility known as the Salvation Army Center of Hope.
This shelter will house 17 beds for veterans, 16-beds for women and 12 for women with children. And one hundred percent of the funding came from private and corporate donations explained Salvation Army Major Bill Shafer. “There’s people that are in need, you know, we’re asking the community to step up and help support those that are in need so that we can give them a hand up instead of just a handout. And we can make a difference and give them hope in life. That’s why it's the Salvation Army Center of Hope.”
And the community responded in a big way – to pay for the shelter. One of the larger donors is the company we just told you about on Friday, April 26, RoyOMartin, as we highlighted the company’s $30 million investment to modernize their manufacturing facility in Oakdale, in Southwest Louisiana. The dedication was scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at 1284 Murray Street in Alexandria. The Center of Hope officially opens its doors in June.
