HOME REPAIR FRAUD / PRICE GOUGING – As thousands across the Red River Radio listening area are still dealing with the aftermath of last week’s severe storms, there’s been numerous reports of alleged price gouging for things ranging from fuel, power generators, and even hotel rooms. As far as Louisiana State Law is concerned, once the governor declares a state of emergency, it is illegal to raise prices for goods and services higher than the prices ordinarily charged for those things. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards issued a state of emergency on June 16th. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux followed with a state of emergency June 19th, retroactive to June 16th.
During a recent press conference Mayor Arceneaux was asked about what can be done locally about price gouging.
“We don’t have any authority to deal with price gouging, that goes through the Louisiana Attorney General’s office,” Arceneaux said.

Mayor Arceneaux urged anyone who suspects price gouging to call the Fraud and Abuse Hotline : 1 – (866) 801-2549,
And if homeowners need repairs or broken tree limbs cut and removed, the Better Business Bureau’s website offers some useful tips on avoiding getting taken by shady operators. The BBB says not all “storm chasers” are con artists, but enough are that you should be cautious any time a home contractor contacts you first especially after a natural disaster.
But it’s recommended to ask if a business is licensed and insured and they should be willing to offer proof when asked. Also avoid any upfront payments and be sure to get a specific quote in writing before work begins.
It’s also recommended to get professional references from recent work completed. And a good first start towards getting legitimate contractors is when you file a claim with your insurance company as they generally know reputable companies they’ve used in the past.
