LSUS Continuing Ed To Offer Medical Cannabis Workshop For Counselors

MEDICAL CANNABIS- LSU Shreveport’s Continuing Education Program is offering a new medical cannabis training workshop for counselors. This in-person interactive workshop will offer counselors and mental health professionals the latest medical cannabis information so they can guide patients on treatment options.

“Medical marijuana is legal in 35 states with an estimate of 30.6 million people, so if we are requiring our counselors to learn about psychopharmacology and to support our clients who are taking pharmaceutical medications, we should absolutely be doing that with medical cannabis,” Dr. Michael Becerra Assistant Professor in Counseling at LSUS explained.

A past study found that allied health trainees lacked sufficient knowledge and were not prepared to counsel patients on medical cannabis. The workshop’s goal is to help counselors and mental health professionals become better informed about medical cannabis benefits as so they can help clients reach health and wellness goals.

“There’s still a lot to learn about cannabis,” Becerra said. “And so this why we’re talking about it just to kind of get in it and start finding information or creating new knowledge in this space, especially for our counselors.”

The medical cannabis workshop is on Thursday, February 2nd, , from 8:00am to 4:30 pm at LSU-Shreveport on Youree Drive. Counselors will earn eight CRCC professional development hours. The website for more registration information is: www.ce.lsus.edu/
