THE WIENER BROTHERS - Louisiana Public Broadcasting will air a documentary this evening where the focus is on two Shreveporters brought modern architecture to Northwest Louisiana and the rest of the country. From the 1930’s through the 1960’s – brothers Samuel G. and William B. Wiener designed residential, institutional, and commercial buildings in Shreveport and throughout the South.
Their work made quite a mark in the world of architecture as Shreveport was an early hub of International Modernist Design; some of their buildings are still in use today.
They brought post-modern architecture to this city and to this country. And for us to be able to put that work out there and show people what Shreveport's all about and what Shreveport has is a real gift." Gregory Kallenberg, filmmaker-Rational Middle Media
Local filmmaker Gregory Kallenberg of the Shreveport-based Rational Middle Media that produced the documentary, explained the brother’s significance at a press conference earlier this year.
"These two brothers built incredible buildings right here in Shreveport, Louisiana, buildings that are significant on a global scale," Kallenberg said. "They brought post-modern architecture to this city and to this country. And for us to be able to put that work out there and show people what Shreveport's all about and what Shreveport has is a real gift."
Kallenberg made those comments last February as the World Premiere of “Unexpected Modernism- The Wiener Brothers Story ” was to have taken place in April at the venerable Strand Theater in Downtown Shreveport—but the coronavirus pandemic shutdown changed all that. Instead, the world premiere took place in November via virtual viewing online. Tonight you can watch “Unexpected Modernisn: The Wiener Brothers Story “ on the Louisiana Public Broadcasting networkat 7pm.
