LONGVIEW DREAM CENTER FOOD PANTRY-  While many of us may be running off to the grocery store for those last-minute items needed for Thursday’s Thanksgiving dinner…a considerable number of families won’t have as much to eat over the holiday or any other day, it’s because they are food insecure; meaning they live under circumstances where they  don’t get enough to eat.  But for families in East Texas,  there is some  help.  Our reporter Suzanne Scribner in Longview files this report.

One  in  Five  Children in  East Texas will go to bed hungry tonight. Not because their parents or caregivers won't feed them but because they can't.   “You have neighbors not sure where there next meal is coming from...They usually deal with it once it is a crisis” ,  That’s Shonna Barlow, Executive Director of  The Longview Dream Center a local clothing and food pantry.  She  explains  that  there  are a lot  of misconceptions  about  food  insecurity.

SERVING 1,000 FAMILIES - The Longview Dream Center has provided nutritious food to East Texas families since 2014.

” I think a lot of people assume just homeless people come into a food pantry but we see a lot of grandparents that come in raising grandkids and low income parents that are working that just do not have enough”.

The Dream Center opened it’s doors  in April 2014 and it currently provides services to more than 1,000 families a month.  " We have a large client service pantry where clients pick up their own food once a month. We do not care what county you come from. Some people drive over an hour to get here."

In addition to providing nutritious food,  the Longview Dream Center has a clothing bank and also  offers computer education training.  It is located at   803 Gilmer Road in Longview and open from 9 to 6 Monday through Friday and 9 to 4 on Saturday.
