SPORTS CONCUSSIONS - The Lone Star state's largest public schools will now have to report all sports concussions for the upcoming school year in one of country's largest statewide initiatives to track brain injuries. The University Interscholastic League will require 6-A schools to submit these injuries as a part of what's called the Concussion-Texas Project (ConTex). UT - Southwestern Medical Center's Dr. Munro Cullum oversees the project. He explains more with public radio's Texas Standard.
"One of our interests is in not just knowing how often these injuries are occuring but when schools switch to,
for a example a new turf or new helmet or tackling procedures," explained Cullum. "We want to know those changes, and the rule changes have any positive impact on reducing concussions."
Smaller schools in Texas are also encouraged to submit data as a part of the project. A new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that in 2017, an estimated 15% of high school students experienced 1 or more concussions, and 6% experienced 2 concussions or more.
