CONTEST FOR LA TEACHERS - Louisiana Musical Legends Contest is a collaborative effort between First Lady - Donna Edwards and the Louisiana Edowment for the Humanities. It comes together through the generosity of longtime music teacher Dorothey Hanna of Vinton, LA. The contest seeks to encourage educators K-12 to submit lesson plans on how they would incorporate teaching about Louisiana musical legends, people who made significant contributions to Louisiana's music heritage.
"We've broken out the state into nine regions and we're working with regional arts councils across the state to encourage teachers to submit applications which consists essentially curriculum for how they would teach about specific musicians for their area," explained Erin Greenwald is Vice President for Content with the La. Endowment for the Humanities. "For the Shreveport area the musician is 'Leadbelly' (Huddy Ledbetter)."
Shreveport Regional Arts Council is encouraging teachers to submit lesson plans on how they would teach "Leadbelly" in the classroom. Region seven consists of Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, and Webster parishes. The La. Musical Legends Contest application period is open until January 18, 2019. Teachers whose with the best applications elected from each of the nine regions will receive a $1,000 award, one per region totaling nine cash prizes in all.
After all nine lesson plans are completed, they will be uploaded and shared online on the LEH's new ly branded website www.64parishes.org and will be free for use by teachers in all classrooms.
"The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities as part of its mission wants to make the whole culture and breadth and richness that is Louisiana available to everybody," explained Mike Bourg, Vice President of Institutional Advancement for LEH. "This is one way of us trying to meet that mission. We're going to help as many people as we can by putting all of these resources out for all the teachers to help bring Louisiana allive and we're going to pull from the archives of what we already have around those people so it helps us use our resources better."
