THE CHRISTMAS BOMBINGS - This month marks the 45th anniversary of Operation LINEBACKER II, a huge bombing operation that was key to getting The North Vietnamese back to the Paris Peace Talks and B-52’s from Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier, Louisiana played a big part. "The ground-war in Viet Nam was a slugfest that truly was a quagmire. The North Vietnamese had approximately 200,000 troops in South Viet Nam; that was not
going to change." ON December 18th, 1972 President Richard Nixon order the US Air Force to bomb North Viet Nam for 11 days. This wasn't an easy bombing mission. "We lost 15 B-52's and 10 other aircraft in this " explained Joiner, "it was not a cakewalk by any means. And some of the stories are absolutely harrowing." But after 11 days of intense bombing, the end-effect was that the North Vietnamese came back to the Paris Peace Talks which led the way to the end of US involvement in Viet Nam.
