Louisiana Congressmen Focus On Renewing National Flood Insurance Program

NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM - Whenever there’s a weather catastrophe  like Hurricane Harvey  where neighborhoods,  towns and even whole cities like Houston get flooded,  the aftermath of recovery and restoration often lasts for months,  even years. Yet  all too often, people lack flood insurance protection which is not covered by regular homeowners insurance.  The National Flood Insurance Program is a supplemental government-insurance that does what its name implies.  BUT…this program is scheduled to expire at the end of September.  Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards expressed the urgency to get the program renewed.  Louisiana Congressman are focusing efforts on getting the program renewed as recent flooding in the city of Houston and surrounding areas may change perceptions that flooding in mostly a Louisiana problem.  However the program is some $25 billion in the red and only has $8 billion to address claims from the recent hurricane.
