The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has opened centers in 23 parishes to assist flood victims in receiving disaster food assistance. The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP) targets households who need help buying groceries due to lost income or damages from the floods that started two weeks ago, according to Department of Children and Family Services deputy assistant secretary Sammy Guillory.
“Regardless of the income that you have, or the liquid assets that you have -- like cash and checking accounts -- if you have a significant amount of disaster-related expenses in that same month those can be subtracted from your income, so you could still possibly be eligible,” Guillory said.
Guillory says the benefits would start at about $194 for one person. Flood victims should pre-register for DSNAP on the department’s website to expedite the process at www.dcfs.la.gov/dsnap. The preregistration doesn’t guarantee benefits, but is designed to save time and cut down on the number of applicants coming to the centers.
