First Lady of South Africa to visit Wiley College in Marshall

WILEY COLLEGE

Wiley College in Marshall will welcome the First Lady of South Africa to its campus Wednesday, Feb. 24, as part of the college's distinguished lecture series.

Madame Gloria Bongi Ngema-Zuma will deliver a lecture today about diabetes awareness, the centerpiece of the foundation she created in 2010.

Madame Ngema-Zuma also works on programs that support presidential community development objectives, focusing mainly on primary health care.

She founded the Bong Ngema-Zuma Foundation in memory of her mother who lived with diabetes for three decades.

According to a Wiley College news release, the First Lady will promote other themes, including the empowerment of women and children, rural development and education in her native South Africa.

She has held communications positions in firms including the Deloitte-IBM initiative and Standard Chartered and Merchant Bank.

She married Jacob Zuma, the president of South Africa, in 2012. She’s visiting East Texas this week as a guest of Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas.

Her lecture at Wiley is set for 9:30 a.m. in the Thomas W. Cole Library, 711 Wiley Ave., Marshall.
