The Caddo Council on Aging has launched a weekly slate of activities for seniors at the Randle T. Moore Center in Shreveport. The stately Shreveport home, built by Swiss crafters in 1920, was donated to the city for the sole purpose of benefiting senior citizens. Caddo Council on Aging executive director Mary Alice Rountree said the programs will cater to seniors, like musical acts, exercise demonstrations, and personalized instruction on using smartphones and other high-tech gadgets.
"We're being able to go through the city and use it on Thursday and Friday mornings, absolutely rent free," Rountree said. "Our vision is to have some really fun, innovative programs."
Shreveport Opera Xpress is set to perform at the center Thursday, Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m. as part of the outreach effort. Rountree says her agency sees many seniors who are cooped up and not making efforts to socialize. She hopes her agency can help change that through these programs.
"This is one more area we want to pursue more because we see a lot of isolation in our seniors at home," Rountree said.
The center will host physical therapist Paula Click Fenter of LSU Health Sciences Center with a presentation on balance on Friday, Jan. 11.
