Centenary College adopts Yellow Ribbon program

Kate Archer Kent

Centenary College in Shreveport affirmed its commitment to the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program at a Veterans Day program. Yellow Ribbon schools help students avoid up to all out-of-pocket tuition and fees associated with education programs that may exceed the Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit. Centenary president David Rowe said post 9/11 veterans and their dependents will not pay tuition to attend the college.

"The Yellow Ribbon program was just perfect,” Rowe said, following a ceremony at Centenary’s Anderson Auditorium. “We can provide a liberal arts education for veterans who are local, or who want to move here from other parts of the country to study at Centenary."

The ceremony included dignitaries from Barksdale Air Force Base. Commander of the Air Force’s Global Strike Command Lt. Gen. James Kowalski told the audience that veterans have written a "blank check" to Americans, and the Yellow Ribbon program is the latest way to honor their service.

"This Yellow Ribbon program is the latest to help our veterans make that transition,” Kowalski said. “It turns the talk of honoring service and sacrifice into an act that truly helps veterans and their families."

Members of the Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council have underwritten the first three Yellow Ribbon Scholarships for Centenary, Rowe said. Centenary’s Yellow Ribbon program was established this fall.
