Spotlight: SLT and Come From Away

Red River Radio's Kermit Poling speaks with cast members from Shreveport Little Theatre's production of Come From Away, opening September 10.

This September, Shreveport Little Theatre presents one of the most moving and uplifting musicals of our time as part of our 105th Season, Legendary: The Stories That Shaped History.

Most of us remember where we were on September 11, 2001. That day changed the way we travel, the way we view the world, and, for many of us, the way we think about our place within it. But while the world watched events unfold in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, an extraordinary story of humanity was beginning in a small community in Newfoundland.

When North American airspace closed on September 11, 38 planes carrying thousands of passengers from around the world were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. Almost overnight, the population of the small community dramatically increased as residents were called upon to care for thousands of complete strangers. They opened their schools, churches, community centers, businesses, and homes. They prepared meals, gathered clothing and blankets, cared for animals aboard the planes, and offered comfort to people who had no idea when, or how, they would get home. That remarkable true story became Come From Away.

With book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away tells the stories of the "Come From Awayers" and the Newfoundland “Islanders” who welcomed them. Through a soaring folk-inspired score, humor, heartbreak, and an ensemble of actors portraying dozens of real-life characters, the musical reminds us of the extraordinary things ordinary people can accomplish when they choose compassion over fear. And this year, the story carries special significance.

Shreveport Little Theatre's production opens September 10, 2026, as our community and nation commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Rather than recreating the tragedy of that day, Come From Away focuses on what happened in the aftermath, when strangers became neighbors and one small community showed the world what it means to take care of one another. It is a story about September 11, but it is also a story about September 12 and the choice to move forward together.
