The 9 flutists of the Shreveport Flute Ensemble perform their next concert on Wednesday March 18th at 7:30pm in Centenary College’s Anderson Auditorium at the Hurley School of Music. The concert is free and open to the public. Among the music to be performed are original works such as Catherine McMichael’s Irish/Celtic inflected music, Anne McGinty’s “Masques” and favorites such as Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” and Mozart’s “Queen of the Night” aria.

The Flute Ensembles, with flutes, piccolos, alto flutes, bass flutes (and more) are a recent historical development dating from the 1960’s when flute ensembles (or choirs) began to appear in colleges and communities, spreading rapidly in the U.S., as flutists shared arrangements and began to compose original works. Today (according to Chat GPT) there are over 200 flute ensembles in 44 US states and nine countries and as of 2012 over 1,200 pieces composed or arranged for flutes ensemble!

Shreveport Flute Ensemble is directed by Sally Horak and includes Rebecca Murphy, Suzanne Howdeshell, Dan Howdeshell, Erica Ernst, Felix Kraus, George Hancock, Sarah Hill, and Shelby Breen.
