A Shreveport cellist is in St. Petersburg, Russia this week competing in the most prestigious classical music competition in the world.
Of the 25 cellists invited to perform in the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, only three are from the US. One of them is 22-year old Shreveport native John -Henry Crawford.
Bach's Suite No. 6 is one of five works in the 50-minute recital Crawford will give in the first round of competition on Friday. The competition has three rounds and concludes June 30. The cellists are vying for six awards, including a grand prize worth $100,000.
The Tchaikovsky Competition will air a livestream of Crawford’s performance on Friday, June 19, at the website tch15.medici.tv. It will take place at 6.a.m. Shreveport time.
Crawford is performing on a 200-year-old cello that is a family heirloom.
The International Tchaikovsky, founded in 1958, takes place in Russia every four years.
