East Texas father-son painters on exhibit in Shreveport

Sara Holmes

A father-son painting exhibit is on display at the Magale Library on the Centenary College campus. Frank Herbert has taught art at Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, for almost 30 years. His son, Carlton, is pursuing his master of fine arts degree at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Carlton Herbert said they both draw from what they see around them to create their art – snapping pictures on their phone for reference – but the similarities end there.

“Both of our work deals with life experience and processing nature, and sort of mundane daily experiences and how they affect our general being," Carlton said, sitting next to his father during an interview at Kilgore College.

Carlton taught art in Texas public schools for seven years before he pursued graduate school. His paintings are inspired by the "middle-school brain freak out." Some recurring themes in his paintings are brain synapses and nonsensical language inspired by what he heard kids say in school.

His father, Frank, is displaying a series of paintings featuring grackles that took up residence in the Wal-Mart parking lot near his Longview home.

“I guess there’s a lot of food for them and they’re not afraid of people. So, I started to photograph them through summer every time I went shopping. Then, I used these photographs to do a series of paintings of these grackles," Frank Herbert said.

"Birds" by Frank Herbert was inspired by the grackles that congregated in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Longview.

The Herberts’ show is on display through the end of the month at Magale Library.
