Airs Thursday, August 13 at 9 p.m. SFJazz tackle the music of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. This episode of Jazz Night in America features interviews with the band on their personal connections with Henderson and we hear highlights from our first concert recorded at at new SFJazz Center. The current line-up of the SFJazz Collective features alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, trombonist Robin Eubanks, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire.

Max Roach: bepop pioneer, drum innovator, social activist, teacher, and so much more. He blazed a path for jazz that burns brightest today in his former student Ali Jackson. Jackson -- himself a multi-hyphenate as percussion wizard, composer, and arranger – studied under Roach after meeting him at twelve. Many years later, Jackson pays tribute to his mentor with an all-star ensemble. This exclusive one-night celebration of Roach was captured by Jazz Night In America.
