CADDO CONFEDERATE MONUMENT- In response to a recent vote to allocate funds for the relocation of a Confederate Monument that sits on the Caddo Parish Courthouse grounds, a representative of the United Daughters of the Confederacy told Caddo Parish commissioners to not budget for the relocation, and that the UDC is not going to fund the relocation either. During the Caddo Commission’s meeting last Thursday evening, Jackie Nichols — spokesperson for the Shreveport chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy — said during public comment: the monument removal and relocation amount the commission has budgeted isn’t nearly enough.
"Our expert witness places the cost of the removal and reassembly of the Confederate monument to be in excess of $1.2 million dollars," explained Nichols. "The cmmission only intends to budget less than half of the job."
Earlier in the week, a Caddo Commission committee voted to recommend setting aside half a million dollars in next year's budget for the purpose of relocating the monument. The Confederate Monument sits on the Caddo Parish Courthouse property and a federal judge has ruled the Caddo Commission has the right to remove the monument. The Commission is scheduled to vote on the matter in early December.
