Suicide is now the 14th leading cause of death in Louisiana. And it is the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-to-24 and 25-to-34. According the Louisiana Department of Health, there’s an estimated 25 suicide attempts for every death by suicide.
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. That’s just part of the message during THIS national suicide prevention month. Louisiana State Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Robyn Thomas, says one important resource she wants everyone to know about is: 9-8-8. “Whether you’re dealing with something such as loneliness, stress, or anxiety, or maybe you are having thoughts of suicide or just need someone to talk to, 988 is here. It is a resource that is available 24/7.” 9-8-8 has specialized lines for veterans, Spanish speakers, LGBTQ+ people under 25, and the hearing impaired.
Looking at suicide rates on a regional and national level, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that on average, adjusted for age, the annual U.S. suicide rate increased 30% between 2000 and 2020, from 10.4 to 13.5 suicides per 100,000 people. While Louisiana is ranked 28th in suicide deaths [at 15.6/100,000 per capita], some nearby states rank higher. Oklahoma, for example, is ranked 9th for suicide deaths, while Arkansas ranks 20th, and Texas ranks 36th.
