Back-to-School Steps Parents Can Take for Smooth Transition

Parents advised to build foundation for their child, which includes physical activity, sleep and proper nutrition for a healthy mind and body.

A clinical psychologist with LSU Health Shreveport has some advice as students head back to school. Michelle Yetman, Ph.D., says there are several important things parents can do to make sure your child is prepared for the school year mentally, physically and emotionally. “So that’s kind of making sure you have a healthy foundation to build on, it’s really important. Physical activity, sleep and nutrition really help you physically, but also mentally, as well.”

Dr. Yetman says children should get into their school routines now to make the transition easier. As for school start dates, it depends on the location. For example, classes for Louisiana public schools are opening this week. Red River Parish Public Schools began Monday, August 5, Claiborne got underway August 6, Bienville and Natchitoches Parish Schools kicked off Wednesday, August 7, while Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto and Sabine Parish Schools started August 8. Webster Parish Public Schools open Friday, August 9.
Texas public schools are opening this week and next, as are most public schools in Arkansas.
