Savannah Music Festival: Asif Ali Khan: Asif Ali Khan

Airs Thursday, January 14, at 8 p.m. There are few types of music that can lift you to a higher plane, that can get you close to an out-of-body moment, than Qawwali. Qawwali music is a form of Sufi devotional music popular in south Asia, primarily in the Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan, as well as parts of north India and Bangladesh. A musical tradition of more than 700 years, Qawwali first gained mainstream popularity and international exposure through the work of Pakistani singer NusratFateh Ali Khan. Since his death in 1997, NusratFateh Ali Khan's student Asif Ali Khan has surely emerged as the music's leading voice. In this episode, we listen to a 2014 performance given by Asif Ali Khan and his Qawwal Party in the historic Unitarian Universalist Church on Troup Square during the Savannah Music Festival.
