The Alexandria Museum of Art is expanding its collection of Louisiana art. Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne will announce the transfer of state-owned art at a news conference Tuesday, June 16.

The 99 pieces of art have been on display in state office buildings for several years, according to a news release from the Office of Lieutenant Governor. The collection includes sculpture, drawing, stained glass, photography, etching and various printmaking techniques. The works are being permanently transferred from Louisiana’s Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism, according to the museum’s executive director Catherine Pears.

“The state collected these pieces. Some of them are higher value than others, but really they’re just valuable because of what they represent, the history of art in our state,” Pears said.

Pears says highlights of this acquisition will be on display by 2017, in time for the museum’s 40th anniversary.

A news conference at the Alexandria Museum of Art, 933 Second St., is set for 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
