A new exhibit at the Alexandria Museum of Art features three artists who have Louisiana roots and have distinguished themselves on a national level. The exhibit, “Trio: Beyond Boundaries,” celebrates the success of three African American artists: Malaika Favorite, Phoenix Savage and Alexandria native Cullen Washington Jr.
Museum executive director Catherine Pears says the museum keeps an eye on Louisiana artists who are making their mark in the art world.
“We’re all about bringing in the big exhibits to expose our audience to the highest quality of art that we can, but it’s really exciting when we can lift up one of our own who has reached that place in their own work,” Pears said.
The Alexandria Museum of Art is in the process of expanding its collection and evaluating every piece in its holdings to ensure it fits within the scope of its mission, according to Pears. She says the museum currently has about 200 pieces.
“We will deaccession some works that don’t fit into the collection. If an institution, over a number of years, accepts every gift without evaluating whether they fit into the collection then the collection becomes not relevant to the mission. That hasn’t been done here for a long time here,” Pears said.
The “Trio: Beyond Boundaries” exhibit runs through Feb. 21.
