Businesses near New York's Times Square benefit from New Year's Eve ball drop

(SOUNDBITE OF SI ZENTNER AND HIS ORCHESTRA'S "NEW YORK, NEW YORK: NEW YORK, NEW YORK")

ASMA KHALID, HOST:

Good morning, I'm Asma Khalid.

Every New Year's Eve, thousands of people gather in New York Times Square to watch the ball drop. It's why businesses near the iconic site are charging big bucks if you want to have dinner and a show as you ring in the new year. Tickets for dinner at the nearby Applebee's were priced over $600, but they're all sold out now. I mean, why wait outside in the cold when you could have bottomless salads to ring in the new year?

It's MORNING EDITION.
