Savannah Music Festival: French bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons

Airs Thursday, June 28 at 8:00 p.m. He's an artist influenced by classical, jazz and the diverse musical traditions of the Mediterranean rim. When double bass player and composer Renaud Garcia-Fons arrived backstage in the van with his custom five-stringed bass, we expected to see yet another huge bass case. Instead, he unloaded a much smaller box from which emerged a wooden body, out of which came the neck, followed by some strings that were quickly attached. And that was merely the prelude for one of the most unique performances by a bassist that Savannah audiences have ever seen.

Savannah Music Festival: Shannon Whitworth Live

Airs Thursday, May 21 at 8:00 p.m. Growing up in the South Carolina low country, Shannon Whitworth was always surrounded by water, before she decided to make her home in the North Carolina mountains. It's the reason that the themes of water and mountains surface regularly in her songs, alongside the women about whom she writes. There are women who run, who hope, who love the wrong man, and when true love is present, women who return.

Savannah Music Festival: Brazilian Duets

Airs Thursday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. The music of Brazil encompasses a wealth of styles influenced by African, European, and Amerindian forms.  After 500 years of history, Brazilian music has developed many unique and original styles such as choro, samba, and bossa nova, all of which have melded with other musical genres from around the world. In this episode, we listen to music performed by Toots Thielemans, Oscar Castro-Neves, Hamilton de Holanda, and Gabriel Grossi, among others.
