Though her childhood was steeped in the culture of mining and Appalachia, Kathy Mattea wasn't really exposed to much traditional mountain music. But after the 2006 Sago mining disaster in her home state of West Virginia, she took her collection of mining and mountain songs and embarked on a project that literally changed her life. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is only 29; his bandmates hover around that age too. But not
only are they among the most sought-after and most distinctive players of their generation; they've
been working together as a band for years already. Their collaboration gave rise in 2011 to
'The Heart Emerges Glistening,' a svelte and darkly modernistic CD highlighted by Akinmusire's
clarion solos. The quintet performs from Newport's Harbor Stage on August 6, 2011.
