Nacogdoches church welcomes young activists

Protestors swarm the Houston offices of TransCanada Monday in protest of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The grassroots coalition Tar Sands Blockade took its peaceful protest of the Keystone XL pipeline to Houston this week to occupy the lobby of a building where TransCanada has offices. Dozens of protesters have used civil disobedience tactics to try to slow down construction of the pipeline through East Texas. The activists, who come from all over the country, have also found their way into church pews in Nacogdoches.

LSU, Tulane study finds north La. prone to poor childhood outcomes

A new study by the LSU/Tulane Early Childhood Policy and Data Center finds that areas of north Louisiana are especially prone to poor early childhood outcomes based on economic, health and education factors. Parishes were measured for 11 risk factors. The study culled parish data on births to teen mothers, the unemployment rate, income, and infant mortality, among other factors.

Airs Fridays at 9:00 p.m. Red River Radio launches the “Caravan,” a new weekly program featuring a diverse selection of music with host Bill Beckett. Each week you'll hear music from around the globe in a mosaic designed to carry the listener along effortlessly. The first hour will feature a broad mix with certain recurring themes such as Blues at the Bottom, From the Edge, or a Return to the Vinyl Frontier. The second hour of “Caravan” will feature live concert material from around the country and world, including locally-produced concerts recorded in our new studios or recorded at venues around our listening region. The third hour is designed to be a seamless and quite moody tapestry called “Be Quiet and Play the Music,” a 52:00 minute segment of music without breaks. Underlying the music is a sort of hidden theme that only Bill knows and he's not telling, so you can approach the hour and let it affect you in your own unique way. Tune in Fridays at 9:00 p.m. for a new and very unique listening experience. Bill has a vast library of music and a deep love of all genres’ from Indian Raga's and Delta Blues to Classical, Jazz, Folk, Rock, Alternative, World and more. Enjoy the experience and discover new music each week. When we launch our in-studio concert portion of the program you may even have the opportunity to be in the audience.
