Airs Tuesday, December 20 at 9:00 p.m. Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip quite like a Hammond B-3 organ. And Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters — he grew up around the instrument since birth (his father is also a jazz organist), cut his first major-label album in his teens and has been honing his innate swing instincts since then. He's 40 now, and will celebrate with an eponymous album in September; at Newport, he brings a soulful trio to the Harbor Stage. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 6, 2011.
Airs Thursday, December 15 at 8:00 p.m. Violinist Mark O'Connor spent ten days at the 2010 Savannah Music Festival playing in a variety of projects. His Hot Swing! Trio at SMF featured guitarist Julian Lage and bassist Gary Mazzaroppi. Inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli (O'Connor's mentor), the group played two nights at the Charles H. Morris Center on a double bill with French bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons. Tune in to this episode to hear highlights from these performances.
