Red River Radio offers a wide variety of holiday special for the season beginning the day before Thanksgiving. Programs for Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, &  New Years, Passover, Easter, The High Holy Days, and more, which celebrate our diverse culture through the sacred and secular, classical, jazz, folk, world, and popular music, story telling, drama, humor, cooking, religion, philosophy, and more. Airs Monday, September 17, 2018, at 11 a.m. Music and teachings from the Jewish mystical tradition on the High Holy Days. Each year, on the evening of the new moon, the beginning of the month of Tishrei in the Jewish lunar calendar, Jewish people around the world begin a period of prayer and self-examination that ends, ten days later, with a twenty-four hour fast. These are the High Holy Days, beginning with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and ending with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

In this one-hour special, the superstar violinist shares a wide variety of recordings that have special meaning for him, including several of his own performances. Ranging from classical gems to cantorial singing to raucous klezmer fiddling, the music will spark warm associations and an emotional response for all listeners.

Airs Sunday, September 16, 2018, at 6 p.m. Music and Liturgy for Yom Kipur, (The Day of Atonement) Sung by The Western Wind with Guest Cantors, Narrated by Leonard Nimoy. Leonard Nimoy and The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble explore the rich and profound musical and spiritual traditions of the Jewish High Holy Days. The Birthday of the World presents some of the most inspiring music of the Jewish Liturgy performed by The Western Wind, guest singers and four internationally renowned cantors.

The Spanish Jews in their travels absorbed the colorful musical accents of Italy, Turkey and North Africa, including exotic percussion. This musical journey interweaves Sephardic folk song with the Monteverdi-like Hebrew choral work of Salamone Rossi – the Songs of Solomon. The daily rhythms of life – love, rejection, feasting and celebration – culminate in the mystical prayers of Shabbat.
